For quite a while I am using now Bazaar for most of my personal projects which are not supposed to go on Google Code or Sourceforge. First you need to get used to the nature of a distributed VCS but it comes in quite handy. One of the main reasons I choose bzr is that it doesn't rely on a proprietary server like Hg or Git. My ISP supports SFTP with quite a decent user control. As mostly a one man-show for these projects control over where and what goes in is simple. And if a branch diverted because you might have forgotten to check in something the merging is not a nightmare like with Subversion. So if you need a quick solution for version control give bzr a shot, it is free and it is working on any conceivable platform supporting Python.
