As some people asked - last year July I pitched the tent of my little family circus in Austria. I escaped wobbly Christchurch, New Zealand just in time. My friends are all fine, if that is the right word. Had a great time and lots of fond memories of five years being in Kiwiland, thanks guys!

New CX Economy Seats

Well, I was forced to be mostly on OneWorld for the recent long trip, flying all long haul (10h+) parts with Cathay. Yikes, the seats in economy!

Good:
- no recline wars, though I rarely feel invaded, except I need to prepare a few slides last minute
- power plug in each seat
- the in-seat video screen is the best I seen so far

Bad:
- no real recline, the slider just parameterizes where it hurts your back
- very thin padding, after 4hours it hurts
- the airbag in the seatbelt is awkward and honestly did somebody check its effectiveness?
- the Windows CE backend for the the IFE is just horrifyingly slow
- the seats are horrifyingly ugly - that has nothing to do with taste, they are just ugly

I guess I am not alone with my opinion

Btw. the new Space+ layout in Air New Zealand 737s is great.

people don't realize how hindering all these automatic and uncontrollable functions in devices can become. For instance, some users of a software I am working on reported slow performance when they use it in low light. It turns out all of them use MacBooks with iSight cameras. When in low light the camera tries to do some magic. Why! There is nothing you control in the camera, there is also nothing the camera can do about the light - there is just none. For all this the pure camera capture processing time jumps from 5ms to 70ms. Additionally this sends the fans in overdrive ... a very bad user experience.

Ok, dann mal wieder mal was mit Text. Sonst denkt der Herr Kris noch das ich anstatt einmal im Monat vielleicht 1x im Jahr rumschaue.

Das klingt jetzt vielleicht arrogant und überheblich aber nach ein paar Wochen im Lande gehen mir die Deutschen, bzw. die deutsche Kultur gerade richtig auf den Senkel, oder sagen wir mal das was in den letzten sieben Jahren davon übrig geblieben ist. In der Kutsche vom Heim zum Schloss muss man selbst von vermutlich sehr intelligenten Wesen "voll krass" und die Substituierung des "s" mit "sch" ertragen - escht. Was ist denn mit der deutschen Sprache passiert? Ist die Leitkultur jetzt an die aus dem TV lallenden Hausmeister und Sommer~~busen~~mädchen gebunden oder ist alles schon Twitterkompatibel in 140 Zeichen?

Und wo bitte kann ich mir eine Gasmaske kaufen. Sparen jetzt alle am Essen wegen der Kreditkrise und rauchen nur noch, oder gibt es eine Anwrackpremie für Lungen? An der Kutschenhaltestelle eben beobachtete ich einen Strassenkehrer der geschätzte 5kg Zigarettenstummel zusammenkehrte. Der ist da jeden Tag! Ist der Lungenkrebs schon wieder vergessen oder wurden Zigaretten von einem Jugendcoach als Heilmittel für Schweinekrippe verschrieben? Den Teer scheinen ja die meisten mit Spucken loszuwerden - selbst Opa Wang aus Beijing hätte seine wahre Freude dran.

Komisch, vielleicht bin ich einfach zu negativ.

Strato is inkompatibel mit Drupal

Um das mal festzuhalten: die Power*** Pakete von Strato sind unzureichend fuer Drupal 6 - die MySQL anbindung wirft staending Fehler, Skripte werfen eine 500. Drupal 5 funktionierte bisher bei mir ausgezeichnet - allerdings seit dem Umstieg auf Drupal 6 gab es staendig mails von Nutzern mit abgebrochenen downloads oder die sich wunderten ob es diese oder jene Info noch irgendwo gibt. Konsequenz: umgezogen auf Joyent und siehe da, es rennt und rennt ...

OpenCV: the disappointing opensource

Just realized that I've been ripped off in an opensource project namely OpenCV. I had ages ago suggested a CMake buildsys for OpenCV - gav... now somebody added part of mine with some additions to the repository. Very disappointing, no mentioning where the original code came from. All has been clarified - thanks guys. Windows Mobile working already, Symbian is just one inch away
